FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Who can volunteer?

Anyone over the age of 16 who passes our background check requirements can volunteer!  Volunteers age 13-15 who pass our background check can volunteer with a parent or guardian. For opportunities for younger volunteers, please contact us at scfoodbank@scfbs.org or by calling (360) 629-2789.

While no experience is necessary, we happily provide training! However, prior experience in various areas such as merchandising, non-CDL truck driving, or other skills could come in handy.

No upfront time commitment is necessary. We offer flexible scheduling, with both one-time and ongoing volunteer opportunities available. Most volunteers elect to work one shift per week, while others enjoy volunteering multiple times a week, depending on their schedule and desires.

Yes! We welcome volunteer groups, including school groups, co-ops, businesses, churches, and community organizations. That being said, larger groups (5+ people) do require advanced planning. Please contact our Volunteer Coordinator to learn more: scfoodbank@scfbs.org

Yes, we’re happy to accommodate community service hours for students over the age of 16. Students age 13-15 may also volunteer with a parent or guardian. All parties volunteering must apply and pass our background check to get started.

Yes, as long as they meet our requirements for a background check. Applicants looking to fulfill court-mandated volunteer hours are encouraged to apply well in advance to their needed completion date, depending on how many hours they need to complete. We cannot accommodate same-day requests for hours completion. 

Casual, comfortable clothing is recommended, and closed-toe shoes are required. We kindly ask that all volunteers refrain from wearing apparel that displays religious, political, or inappropriate imagery or messaging.

Some roles may involve standing, lifting, or moving items, but we do our best to match volunteers with jobs that meet their necessary physical requirements. Please let us know if you need an accommodation and we will endeavor to support you with suitable tasks!
